1968-69-70-71 “THE MUSCLE CAR ERA” AMERICAN MOTORS WAS IN THE FIGHT OF IT'S LIFE , THEY WERE STRUGGLING TO PRODUCE RELEVANT CARS..
RAMBLER MAINTAINED A SMALL AND SHRINKING MARKET WITH CARS LIKE THE AMBASSADOR , THE REBEL , THE AMERICAN…….. MOVING AWAY FROM THE STODGY RAMBLER TAG “AMERICAN MOTORS” CAME TO THE PARTY WITH THE JAVELIN , THE AMX , THE SC/RAMBLER AND THE AMBASSADOR SST AND THE REBEL SST…….TODAY WE WILL FOCUS ON THE AMX… AMERICAN MOTORS WANTED DESPERATELY TO BREAK FREE OF THE ECONOBOX , STODGY REPUTATION ESTABLISHED BY “RAMBLER”.....SOOO..IT DEVELOPED A 2 SEATER ALL STEEL GT CAR TO COMPETE WITH THE FIBERGLASS CORVETTE...THE “AMX” THE X STANDING FOR EXPERIMENTAL….. THE CAR DEBUTED IN 1968 . AMERICAN MOTORS INVITED WORLD RECORD HOLDER CRAIG BREEDLOVE TO TEST THESE CARS PRIOR TO THEM BEING MADE AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC….THEY WERE DELIVERED TO GOODYEAR'S RACE TRACK IN TEXAS WHERE THE CARS WERE UP FITTED WITH A RAFT OF UPGRADES AND PROMPTLY WENT OUT AND SET 106 NEW WORLD SPEED AND ENDURANCE RECORDS AT THE TEXAS SPEEDWAY …..THE ONCE “FRUMPY” RAMBLER GAVE BIRTH TO A REAL RACE HORSE , THE AMX IS HERE!!! AMC ALSO INTRODUCED THE SUPER STOCK AMX WITH 2- 4 BARREL HOLLEY CARBS AND 12.3:1 COMPRESSION HEADS THEN HURST GOT THE CAR AND WORKED THEIR MAGIC… AMERICAN MOTORS STILL MAINTAINED A 340 HORSEPOWER RATING BUT THE NHRA SAID IT WAS CLOSER TO 420. THIS CAR RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX TURNED 10'S AND CROSSED THE LINE AT OVER 125 MPH, THAT WAS HAULIN' ASS IN 1969……… THIS CAR WAS BORN WITH A 290 V-8 ,A MANUAL TRANSMISSION WHICH MAKES IT ONE OF THE RAREST AMX'S PRODUCED WITH ONLY 619 OF THESE IN 1969… AT SOME POINT A PREVIOUS OWNER REPLACED THE 290 WITH A 390 AND DID NOT REPLACE THE A/C COMPRESSOR SO THE CAR CURRENTLY IS SANS A/C ……. THIS CAR HAS MADE EVERY BODY'S LIST OF “MOST COLLECTIBLE” AND A LARGE NUMBER OF “MOST AFFORDABLE COLLECTOR CARS”....THESE CARS JUST MAKE SENSE…………. CONSERVATIVELY PRICED……...
