SRT-10 50 MERC??? Yeah Baby............ Taking COOL to the Outer Limits
1950 Mercury Coupe….
Old School Cool….New School Technology…
The combination of the two is devastatingly Cool… When I think of the Lead sleds of old The silhouette is always a very early 50's Mercury.
Always a chopped top and usually associated with some cat nicknamed “Scarface” or
“ Icepick”... I imagine the guy getting out of the car with his very clean white T-shirt , sleeves rolled up, a pack of camels in the sleeve , a stick match in his teeth. Hair greased and combed straight back on the sides. a little waterfall of shiny greased hair in the front just barely touching his forehead…….And nobody wants to make eye contact because ...well just because the level of intimidation one might feel when “Scarface” gets out of the Chopped and lowered Mercury might be more than what most folks would care to deal with,in public any way……
In those days the motor would have been a well built Flathead or a small block Chevrolet…. In those days we never would have thought about what I call the “Outer Limits of Cool” …..James Dean ,Steve Mcqueen, Marlon Brando Cool….The “Build” that was so extensive and expensive that it would be next to impossible for a normal human being ……….. But here it is….”That Build”
It began with a rather original 50 Merc. that had settled into a field for decades , then was drug onto the back of an old trailer ending up in a nondescript garage where for four years it was massaged and worked from on end to the other… Nothing was left untouched , Nothing was accepted as good enough…. Every single nut bolt and washer was replaced , with new…
The heart of this build is an SRT 10 Viper motor and 6 speed transmission and then peaking under the skirts of this incredibly sexy 50 Merc. We see a complete
Chris Alston's Chassisworks frame powder coated in brilliant viper red .The massive rear tubs are now full of giant 33 X 21.5 X 15 Mickey Thompson street tires on and all of that gets it's juice from a “FAB 9” rear end with 3.89:1 gear Turning Strange 31 spline axles ….Traction and ride control is accomplished with Varispring adjustable coilovers shocks.Exhaust gasses are freely expelled through a 3 inch Flowmaster exhaust with custom cut outs (just in case you want it loud and rowdy)..
Stopping power is provided by a full set of Wilwood slotted rotor discs.
Guages and info displays are all Viper, electric door poppers with remotes provide easy access… Comfort is provided for with full leather interior power seats, power windows, air conditioning and tinted glass … as I said when I started this story ...This build was too expensive and too extensive for anybody, that had any thought of breaking even or making a profit , to attempt .
I would estimate that this build if you had to pay for it at any professional shop would easily cost in the range of $250,000.00 You can own this one of a kind ,one off, ultra cool SRT Merc. for less than half of the build cost...
